Does CBD Oil Show Up On a Drug Test? This is What You Need to Know

CBD oil products are booming in popularity, and for good reason. CBD has been shown to help relieve everything from pain, inflammation, depression, and nausea to even assisting with seizures and cancer treatment.

Because it’s a newer sensation, there are still a lot of questions surrounding CBD products. One of the most common questions is does CBD oil show up on a drug test?

If you have a drug test coming up and you’re worried about using CBD oil, read on to find out if you’ll be fine.

Does CBD Oil Show Up On a Drug Test?

In short, no it does not. Workplace drug screens do not test for CBD, so even if you’ve been taking CBD supplements and the CBD is in your system, it won’t show up on a drug test.

Employees are mostly concerned with impairment when drug testing employees. Since CBD has no psychoactive effects, workplace drug tests do not test for the presence of CBD.

If you are undergoing a medical procedure, you’ll likely undergo a drug test to make sure there isn’t anything that will react negatively with the procedure. In this case, they may test for CBD, so consult your doctor beforehand.

Can I Fail a Drug Test From Using CBD Oil?

This is where using CBD oil can get tricky if you know you’re going to be drug tested.

While drug screens don’t test for CBD, some CBD products contain a trace amount of THC in them. While the amount isn’t enough for you to feel any psychoactive effects, if you use enough CBD (1,000-2,000 mg each day) there is a small chance you could create a false positive. If you use a significant amount of CBD oil on a daily basis its best to be upfront with your employer just in case.

Other Things to Know About CBD Oil

If you’re still concerned about CBD oil showing up on a drug test, the best thing is to just stop using for a while prior to the drug test. An article from Intrinsic Hemp explains that there have been no studies showing how long CBD remains in urine, so the earlier the better to be safe.

Be careful with which CBD products you purchase. While CBD-only products are legally required to contain less than 0.3% THC, it’s not well regulated, and cross-contamination can occur. A recent study showed that out of 84 CBD products labeled to contain no THC, 18 of them still contained trace amounts.

The best way to avoid any chance of cross-contamination is to only order high-quality CBD isolate products.

Other Ways to Stay Healthy

So does CBD oil show up on a drug test? No. But if you’re really concerned with a false positive from THC contamination, there are plenty of other ways to stay healthy without using CBD oil.
