How Do You Wear a Disposable Mask?

When you talk, thousands of tiny droplets of oral fluid eject from your mouth. Depending on the space you are in, these droplets can linger in the air for up to 14 minutes.

Knowing you are inhaling spit every time someone speaks is troubling. But what about if the person speaking to you has an airborne virus or disease?

Wearing a mask is a great defense against becoming sick with a virus or disease but you have to wear it the right way.

Wash Your Hands

Before you put on your face mask, be sure to wash your hands.

If you have any germs on your hands, they can easily transfer to your face mask, defeating the purpose of wearing the mask. For this reason, wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds before touching your mask.

Check Your Mask

According to the DMS Coalition, wearing a mask can protect you from viruses and diseases, but not if it’s defective.

Check your mask for holes and tears before putting it on. Once you have verified your mask is not defective, you can move on to the next step.

Place the Mask on Your Face

When you are putting your mask on, make sure to place the side with the white cloth on your face, and the side with the blue cloth facing outwards.

It’s important to wear your mask correctly to have the most protection. For any disposable mask you are wearing, check the package to make sure you are wearing it correctly.

Secure the Mask

Most disposable, medical masks are secured with thin, elastic bands, looped over your ears. However, you may have a mask that ties behind your head. However you secure your mask, make sure it is not too tight to wear for a long period.

Position the Mask Correctly

The disposable surgical masks need to be positioned correctly to be effective.

The mask should be covering your nose, mouth, and chin, with the metal band molded to your nose. If the mask seems too short, gently pull the bottom to expand.

Make Sure You Can Breathe

Your mask should fit your face without blocking your ability to breathe.

If you are finding it hard to breathe, loosen the mask. You can also adjust the metal band on your nose to fit a little looser.
